Vintage and Custom Seat Restoration and Manufacture
Seat Covers we furnish for the European cars are typically made for us by the factory authorized shops in Italy. In the case of correct Ferrari leather, we use the new tannery that Ferrari developed to replace the original Connolly leather, no longer available from Connolly. They even use the original Connolly numbers so ordering and matching is easy. If a Dino, Daytona, Boxer, 308/328 or 355 seat cover is being made for us, (for you), the original Scaglietti dies are used to make the vinyl strips that go on the seats, where required. Original quality leather (actually better now in 2008/2009 than the 50's and later) , original seat strips and factory workmanship make these seat covers "works of art"
Eight years ago we needed a Ferrari Dino seat, a pair, for a client whose car had been in a fire. We asked the shop in Italy that made the factory seat covers if they could help and they contacted one of the craftsmen who had worked for Scaglietti of Italy when the Dino was being produced. This craftsman had been involved in the making of the seats originally. With permission from the right people in Italy, this craftsman went back to the old Scaglietti warehouses and luckily found the original manufacturing dies used to make the seat frames. Not only did he find the dies for the Dino seats but also the correct dies for the Ferrari Daytona, 275 GTB (also Lusso), 250 GTO and SWB Competition (also TdF). Now we can offer not only a service of restoration of your old seats but complete new seats as well. If the cushions have disintegrated on your old seats, it is often more cost efficient to just order brand new seats, trading in your old ones for a bit of credit on the new ones.
In the case of Maserati we use either the original Connolly style leather used in some cars or the PAC grain leather used in some cars. We found the shop in Italy that has the PAC grain imprint dies that performed the "graining" for Maserati during the 50's and 60's. They are kind enough to again perform this "graining" service for us when the car requires it. They will even match the colors if not standard, requiring only 7 hide minimums.
Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Porsche and Mercedes seat covers are also made for us in Italy because of the factory quality in materials and workmanship. We find it unnecessary to go to Germany for the German car interior products.
Original BMW seat covers were made in Italy actually from the 1960's on as the cars furnished to the Italian dealers were in cloth with a factory kit available in leather should the client order it. Import duty on the vehicles from Germany was 30-40% when this practice started and with a cloth interior, the car costs and hence import duties were reduced a significant amount. By the time Europe adopted the European Economic Community and the borders and hence duties were "obsolete", the system become so efficient it is continued to this day. These great factory "kits" are available for BMW cars from the 1980's and 1990's.
Our labor rate as of December 2008 is only $60 per hour. Expertise and a reasonable cost may be worth considering. We thrive on the challenge.
